Galileo Galilei – most people simply call him Galileo – was one of the most significant people in the history of science.
Galileo played a major role and was instrumental in establishing the scientific revolution.
He was born in Pisa on February 15, 1564. Galileo began to study medicine at the University of Pisa but changed to philosophy and mathematics. In 1589, he became professor of mathematics at Pisa.
In 1609, Galileo heard about the invention of the spyglass, a device which made distant objects appear closer. Galileo used his mathematics knowledge and technical skills to improve upon the spyglass and build a telescope.
He became the first person to look at the Moon through a telescope and make his first astronomy discovery.
In Galileo’s lifetime, all celestial bodies were thought to orbit the Earth. Supported by the Catholic Church, teaching opposite of this system was declared heresy. Galileo, however, did not agree.

His formulation of inertia, the law of falling bodies, and parabolic trajectories marked the beginning of a fundamental change in the study of motion.
Among his inventions were telescopes, a compass and a thermometer.
In 1633 the Inquisition convicted him of heresy. They sentenced him to life imprisonment, but because of his advanced age allowed him serve his term under house arrest at his villa in Arcetri outside of Florence.
Galileo died at Arcetri in 1642 — the year Isaac Newton was born.
A number of things have been named after him including the Galilean moons of Jupiter, the Galileo spacecraft, Asteroid 697 Galilea.
There are numerous plays, novels and movies which have depicted his life and his scientific philosophy.
