We all live under the same sky, but we don’t all have the same horizon.
Adenauer was West Germany’s first chancellor and a key figure in rebuilding the country after World War Two.
Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967) was the first chancellor of West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany), an office he held for 14 years – an era in which the country recovered from the Nazi dictatorship, built up Europe’s strongest economy, dealt with the Berlin Wall and the Cold War, and gained a leading role in Europe.
After graduating in 1901 he practiced law in Cologne, then entered politics in 1906 as a member of the City Council.
By 1917 he was Mayor. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 he was President of the Prussian State Council and of the Council of German Cities.
Everyone tries to cope with the unexpected changes: 23 Quotes On Moving On
In 1933 Adenauer was dismissed from all his positions by the Hitler regime for “crimes against the German people.” For 11 years he lived quietly near Bonn. The Gestapo put him in a concentration camp in 1944.
In 1948, he was made president of the parliamentary council which drew up a constitution for the three western zones of Germany. These were the zones occupied by the French, British and Americans.
Adenauer was elected chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany on 15 September 1949.
With others, he is considered to be a founding father of the post-World War II European institutions including the Council of Europe and the European Union.
A stern patriarch and shrewd politician, Adenauer was deeply committed to the traditional values of Christianity and pursued a single-mindedly Western-oriented foreign policy.
He restored the West Germany economy to dominance in Europe, rebuilt its army, came to terms with France, helped establish European unity, fought relentlessly against the Communists in rival East Germany, and made his nation a pillar of NATO and a firm ally of the United States. He brough Germany prosperity, democracy, stability and respect.
