What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?
Dr. Robert Schuller (1926-2015) was known to millions as the upbeat preacher of “possibility thinking” on his “Hour of Power” television show from the mammoth Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, and as the author of more than 30 books.
Born in 1926 to an Iowan family of Dutch descent, Robert Schuller was reared in the Reformed Church in America.
He held his first services in a drive-in theater, with the roof of a snack bar as his pulpit, and with a portable organ that he and his wife hauled on their trailer.

His motivational speaking and motto — “Come as you are in the family car” — struck a chord with the “baby boomer” generation that flocked to suburban Orange County in the late 1960s and 1970s.
For more than 40 years, Dr. Schuller was an apostle of positive thinking and a symbol of success.
He began broadcasting Hour of Power in 1970. In 1978 Dr. Schuller commissioned the architect Philip Johnson to design a huge “Crystal Cathedral”. This cathedral is a vast golden edifice with 10,000 windows, huge video screens, and a 10-foot tall angel hovering from the roof on a rope of gold. He has built up a congregation of over 9,500 members in a church that cost over $20 million.
In 2010, with debts of $43 million, Crystal Cathedral ministries filed for bankruptcy. After the cathedral was sold, the remaining congregation, led by one of Schuller’s grandsons, moved to a nearby church.
His ministry represented a new wave in mainstream American Protestantism, one that held out hope not just for achieving personal salvation, its traditional concern, but also for solving personal problems.
Possibility thinking. In the first place, God will probably give you a bigger task than you would ever have dreamed possible yourself, because God generally sees greater possibilities in you than you do yourself.
His focus was on “looking at the positive instead of the negative.”
“I can do something. … In that, you are repenting positively of the sins of omission,” he said.
